How It Works

The first step is deciding what type of hat you’d like to create. Whether you’re drawn to a traditional western style, a buckaroo hat, a mountain man look, or even a classic fedora, we can help guide you toward the style that best suits you. Many customers come with a clear vision, while others simply know they want a great hat. Either way, we’ll help you find the right direction.

Once your order is placed, we’ll mail you a conformateur along with clear instructions. This specialized tool allows us to measure not only the size of your head, but its exact shape as well. That information is what allows us to build a hat that truly fits you, something that off-the-shelf hats simply cannot provide.

After the conformateur is returned to us, you’ll select the felt quality and color for your hat. We offer two felt options:

• 50X – A blend of 50% European Wild Hare and 50% pure Beaver

• 100X – Pure Beaver felt, considered the finest quality available in hat making

We offer a wide variety of colors so you can choose the look that fits your personal style. You can view the full selection on the Find Your Hat page, and we’re happy to help confirm availability.

Once your felt and color are selected, we’ll move into the finer details that give your hat its personality. This includes choosing the brim width, hat band, and the exact crown and brim shape you’d like. Whether you have a specific look in mind or would like some guidance, we’ll work together to make sure the final design reflects exactly what you’re looking for.

If your selected hat body is not already in stock, it will be ordered promptly so work can begin as soon as possible. Most custom hats are completed within 4–6 weeks. During this time your hat will be carefully blocked, hand-shaped, sanded, and finished to bring out the full character of the felt. Before your hat ships, we’ll send photos for your approval. If any small adjustments are needed, we’ll work with you to make sure everything is just right before it leaves our shop.
